A printed certificate can be copied, edited, or paired with a QR code that leads to an unrelated page. A useful anti-counterfeit certificate verification system connects each issued document to a controlled record and gives the recipient a simple way to check whether it matches the issuer’s current information.

Use a unique, non-guessable record

Assign each report a unique identifier and make the verification URL specific to that record. Avoid exposing sequential database IDs if they allow someone to enumerate records. Decide what details are public and keep client contact information, private notes, and sensitive evidence behind appropriate access controls.

Control issuance and correction

Generate the certificate from approved record fields. Restrict who can issue, correct, or withdraw a document. Record the issue date and status, and keep an authorized history when a certificate is corrected. A verifier should distinguish valid, superseded, withdrawn, and not-found records rather than returning the same generic message.

Make the QR page useful

Show enough information to compare the certificate in hand with the issuer’s record: reference number, issue status, and selected attributes. Add a contact path for questions. If photographs or test evidence are public, confirm that the organization intends to expose them and has appropriate permission.

Protect the verification service

Use HTTPS, protect administrator accounts, back up records, monitor unusual lookup patterns, and test how the system behaves if a report is changed. A QR code is a pointer, not a guarantee. The trust comes from the issuer’s record process, account controls, and clear correction policy.

Test realistic failure cases

  • Scan a valid code from multiple phones and networks.
  • Try a code with one character changed.
  • Check a withdrawn or superseded certificate.
  • Confirm that private client data is not shown.
  • Verify that a corrected report has a clear current status.
  • Test the process for restoring a record from backup.
